Mexican Talavera ceramic tile exudes a natural magnetism that invites to be seen and touched. Made of clay and glazed by hand with natural color pigments, then baked in a kiln in which the colors become alive and vibrant, it acquires a somewhat rustic and timeless appeal.

Our Talavera Collection is a compilation of designs from different origins. The tiles are ideal in just about any ambience whether Spanish, Italian, Moorish, Mexican, Mediterranean or Southwest style architecture.

The tiles are made from clay dug out of the ground and fired to a temperature at which the clay undergoes chemical changes and becomes permanently hard. Then the tile is glazed and decorated by hand, and fired once again to give it its final and lively finish. Its physical characteristics make Mexican tiles particularly attractive and distinctive. Mexican tiles are concave (not perfectly flat). They are characterized as unique, irregular, functional, and expressive.

  • 1/4" thick.
  • Due to handmade nature, tiles may vary by up to 1/4 in. Sizes are nominal, meaning that sizes vary from the actual.
  • Crazed Effect: Crazing effect refers to small cracks on the surface of a tile, characteristic which is inherent and may be visible before and/or after installation. However, over time this attribute may become more prominent or can be enhanced by using a contrasting colored grout.
  • Finish: Due to the sensitive nature of talavera tiles surface scratches may be prominent in dark colors. For example, Cobalt Blue. All Talavera tiles have a glossy finish.
  • Color variation within individual tiles.
  • Variations in thickness, flatness, size, & squareness.

Each of our Mexican talavera tile is unique and handcrafted. The hand made nature gives it a warm and rustic finish.

Characteristics of Mexican Talavera Ceramic Tile:

  • PLEASE NOTE: All sizes posted for our Mexican talavera tile on this website are nominal sizes (not actual size). Due to the handcrafted nature of our talavera tiles their ACTUAL SIZE is approximately 4¼ x 4¼ in., or 61/8 x 61/8 in. when available.

Also, note that handcrafted Mexican Talavera tiles are not perfectly square. The height and length of a tile may not be the same. Measurements within a tile may vary by as much as 1/8 in. and 3/8 in.
  • Characterized as unique, irregular, functional, and expressive.

  • All our talavera tiles have a red body bisque.

  • Mexican tiles are concave (not perfectly flat).

  • All of our standard mexican tiles have a ¼ in. thickness. Larger and smaller tiles vary in thickness accordingly.

  • Colors and design may vary slightly.

  • Variations in contour and size are standard.

  • The tiles are slippery when wet if used as floors.

  • Crazing effect is inherent over time, and can be enhanced by using a contrasting colored grout. We recommend to sealed before and after grouting. The application of a penetrating sealer is recommended in accordance with the sealer manufacturer’s instructions to further enhance the durability of the tile.

  • Industry standard recommends to add on 5-10% additional to the tile needed to account for waste, special cuts, or other unforeseen problems. This is particularly important in complex installations.

  • Lot variation in size and color may be present from shipment to shipment. There is no guarantee that tiles ordered as add-ons will match those from the original orders. This is an inherent characteristic in all ceramic tiles, and particularly in all handcrafted tiles.

  • Talavera tiles are NOT frost proof.

Further Installation Details:

Ceramic Tile Installation

The successful installation of ceramic tiles is highly affected by the installation process. Tierra y Fuego strongly recommends hiring or consulting a skilled professional tile installer, even for small projects. Tierra y Fuego is not liable for tile that has been altered from its original state due to improper handling during the installation process.  Inspect the tile prior to installation as installation signifies acceptance.

For a successful installation of Tierra y Fuego’s ceramic tiles, please take note of the following recommendations:

  • Carefully choose a skilled tile installer.

  • Properly blend all tiles prior to installation.

  • Make sure the installer is informed of all the procedures and products; and carefully follows the manufacturer’s instructions of any solutions such as sealers, grout releases, and cleaners that may be used or come in contact with the tile during the installation process.

  • Seal tiles with a penetrating sealer of your choice prior to grouting. We recommend 511 Impregnator Sealer from Miracle Sealants Company for medium to dense porous surfaces.

  • One important consideration as part of the tile selection process is the color of the grout.  Depending on the desired final overall look, there are three basic approaches to selecting the grout color: matching, contrasting, and neutral.  Grout will affect the product’s final appearance.

  • Grout tile with sanded grout. Premixed epoxy grout is NOT recommended due to its viscosity.

  • Allow the entire tiled area to dry completely. Depending on environmental climate, it will typically take 24 hours to dry.

  • After the installation has been completed, seal the entire area once again with a penetrating sealer.

  • Note: Always test a small sample tile with the solutions that might be used during installation before applying to an entire area.

This guide is intended to provide information on frequently asked questions. Opinions vary in the ceramic tile industry about the proper installation of ceramic tiles. However, since Tierra y Fuego tiles are porous they should be sealed with a penetrating sealer before and after grouting.
